Prompt #42 - Hope is the Thing with Feathers
Fandom: Original Story
Summary: Kai begins to get depressed when he realizes nothing will ever be the same. Su shows him another side of things.
Disclaimer: I OWN THESE CHARACTERS. THEY ARE MIIIINE

Also, as I don't have anything else with these two twits in particular posted...Quick rundown.
Kasai: older of the two, has these freaky fire abilities. Normally very optimistic but when he emos - beware! Nicknamed Kai.
Sukai: younger one, is an empath (much to his despair) and has black wings (which is, even in this strange world, very unusual). Lifelong friend of Kasai's. Very insecure, though he's more confident when Kai is around. Kasai calls him Su.
Mentioned: Aisu, Yuuji & Miyuki (Yuki), Anjera - first three, friends of the two, also freaks in their own rights. Anjera is more or less the local "wise lady" or something like that. She's hard to describe.
Okay, I'm done. That's basically all you need to know.
Enjoy.

“Kasai…?”

Hearing the quiet voice, the blond glanced behind him, seeing a smaller boy standing by the stairs leading onto the roof. He managed a tired smile that failed to reach his eyes, before turning away. Light footsteps broke the relative silence, the brunet coming up to sit down beside him.

“Hey, Kai,” he said softly, concern in both his voice and expression. “Is everything…alright? You’ve been awfully quiet the last few days…”

With a sigh he shrugged, looking up at the sky. “I…I dunno, Su. A lot’s happened in the past few days…” He let out a short laugh, an amused smile flitting across his face. “No offense, but I’m actually a bit surprised you haven’t had a mental breakdown yet. What with all the people here and all.”

“Anjera taught me how to block them out,” the younger said, shrugging lightly himself. “Although, I admit…the last few nights have been really rough. I haven’t been able to sleep at all. Every time I start to drift off I get hit by something and wake right back up. Still can‘t block ‘em while I‘m sleeping.”

Kasai frowned, wrapping an arm around his friend’s shoulder, rubbing his arm as the other leaned into his side. “Sheesh, Sukai, why haven’t you said anything?”

“You’re always sound asleep,” he mumbled, closing his eyes. “Don’t want to bother you. Don’t worry, I eventually pass out at some point. Sometime around…three-ish. I think. Usually.”

The blond sighed, shaking his head. “Why didn’t you take Anjera up on her offer for that place up higher where the other empaths are?”

Sukai sighed, frowning. “You guys can’t get up there. I’d feel bad leaving all of you down here.”

“Well, you’re going to make us feel bad when you pass out from sleep deprivation in a couple days,” Kasai countered, chuckling lightly.

“I’ll get used to it. Eventually,” the brunet sighed, shrugging one shoulder. “If I can manage to fall asleep before you, I should be alright, so long as you’re not switching moods as rapidly as a girl with PMS…” The boy scowled at this, eyes opening. “I swear one of the girls was doing that last night. Kept going from happy to furious and then downright miserable around midnight before flipping back to furious and happy. Drove me absolutely nuts.”

Kasai chuckled again, shaking his head. “Probably Yuki reading one of her romance novels. You know how she gets.”

“Unfortunately more so than you guys.”

A comfortable silence fell, Kasai absently kicking his feet against the side of the building as he watched the multitudes of people mill about in the streets down below. He raised an eyebrow when he felt Sukai attempt to push further into his side, the boy’s head drooping.

“Are you falling asleep?” he asked incredulously, eyes widening.

Almost instantly Sukai jerked back upright, blinking rapidly. “Ah, sorry!” he exclaimed, rubbing his eyes. “You’ve been keeping your emotions so stable I haven’t had to try blocking anything out. I guess I’m more tired than I thought I was.”

He laughed softly as he shook his head. “I guess so,” he said, as his friend resettled himself leaning on his shoulder. “Well, look on the bright side; you should be able to fall asleep relatively quickly tonight.”

“Hopefully,” Sukai grumbled, yawning widely a moment later. “Do you mind if I sleep next to you tonight?” he asked, not missing the brief flash of bewilderment from the older teen. “You’re the only person besides Anjera whose emotions aren’t all over the place. Even Yuuji isn’t as stoic as he would like everyone to believe.”

“Well, if that’s what it’ll take for you to fall asleep, you might as well just crash next to me every night,” Kasai said, sounding contemplative. Sukai looked up at him wide-eyed in surprise.

“Seriously?” he asked.

Kasai shrugged, reaching up with his free hand to adjust the sunglasses on his head. “Sure. I don’t see why not. We can just push the beds together so I don’t kick you off or anything.”

“…’kay…”

Again that calm silence fell, Sukai now swinging his feet alongside Kasai’s, in an obvious attempt to keep himself awake. “Hey, Kai…?” he asked after several minutes, looking down at the ground far below. Hearing the soft hum indicating his friend had heard him, he glanced up, cerulean eyes filled with worry. “As much as I don’t mind getting just one straight emotion from you…why do you feel so depressed?”

Kasai froze for a moment, before chuckling quietly, shaking his head. “Should’ve expected this to come up. Am I getting to you?” he asked, lifting his hand to ruffle Sukai’s hair.

Sukai frowned at the obvious attempt to change the subject, shaking off the hand. “Kasai, seriously. I’m worried. You were like this yesterday too. What’s wrong?”

“Everything’s changing,” the blond said bluntly, sighing. “Now that we’re here, things are never going to be the same, ya’know? Yuuji’s training to be a Centrinel, Yuki’s busy with her healer training and I hardly ever see Aisu anymore. You’re the only one I still see on a regular basis, and you’re usually like the walking dead on a good day from all the training Anjera’s been putting you through.”

“Well, of course things are changing,” Sukai said, frowning. “We’re just settling into our new lives. And you know the training’s only temporary. I’ll be finished with mine in just another year or so.”

“What am I supposed to do for that time then?” Kasai snapped. “It not like I have anything to do; you were there when Anjera said I don’t need training!”

Sukai huffed, grabbing Kasai’s arm, jerking him around to face him. “Then be glad you don’t have to train!” he exclaimed. “Be glad you don’t have to work at controlling your gifts! Do you have any idea how tired we are at the end of the day when we’ve been training? If it weren’t for Anjera giving me a bit of her energy at the end of the day I wouldn’t even make it back to the housing complex! Yuuji broke his arm yesterday during training, and Yuki passed out trying to mend it for him! And Aisu had a mental breakdown Tuesday because she can‘t control her psychokinesis properly and she just got out of the healing ward last night! Did you know any of that?”

Kasai was stunned into silence, as, while he would expect an outburst from one of the girls, level-headed Sukai was the last person he had expected to blow up on him. Sighing, he looked away, shaking his head. “No, I didn’t,” he muttered. “I guess I’ve been so wrapped up in myself…I didn’t even think of what you guys were going through…”

“Obviously,” the brunet huffed, rolling his eyes. Kasai only laughed, ruffling his hair as he stood.

“Okay, I deserve that snark,” he said, stretching. He stumbled slightly as a gust of wind passed, eyes widening as he felt his foot slip off the edge of the building.

“Kai!” Sukai screamed as the blond toppled over with a shout of surprise, wasting no time in launching himself off after him. Wings burst from his back, pushing him forward as he grabbed the older -and, unfortunately, heavier- boy by the arm, jerking back to stop their descent. However, their combined weight proved to be too much for his wings to take, and he yelped as they gave out, dropping them through the air.

“Su, wings out!” Kasai yelled, trying his hardest not to panic. Wincing, Sukai forced his wings out wide again; his own eyes widened as a burst of flame erupted beneath them, the rush of heated air catching in his wings and forcing them upwards. Eyes watering as he forced his wings out as straight as they could go, he managed to stabilize their shaky glide, letting them drift over the roof of a nearby building.

Kasai let go of the younger teen’s hands, dropping to the roof. Seconds after he landed, Sukai fell down after him in a flurry of black feathers, energy spent and breathing heavily. He yelled in surprise as he jumped forward despite the brunet being too far away for him to catch, crashing to the ground in a messy pile of lanky limbs and wings.

“Sukai!” he exclaimed, hurrying over, said boy groaning as he tried to roll himself off his wing, his left arm pinned under him at an unnatural angle. As carefully as he could, he turned him over, giving him a moment to put away his wings before he even thought of looking over his arm.

“I’ll be okay,” the younger croaked, leaning onto him heavily. “I’m okay.”

Kasai frowned, glancing down at Sukai’s arm; it was bent at a strange angle, and he was almost positive it was broken. “Your arm-”

“It’ll be fine,” Sukai said, shaking his head. “It’s nothing the healers can’t take care of. Are you okay, Kai?”

Kasai was quiet for a few long moments, knowing what Sukai was asking of him. Absentmindedly he picked up one of the feathers on the ground, twirling it between his fingers, watching it. Finally he nodded, “Yeah. I think I am.”

Sukai reached up with his good hand to close his fingers around the feather Kasai was holding, holding it in the older teen’s hand. “That’s good,” he said softly. “You just have to remember hope’s the thing with feathers,” he said. “No matter what, it’ll come through for you.”

“Regardless of the color?”

Sukai laughed, nodding. “Yes, regardless of the color.” With a tired sigh, he let his hand drop, closing his eyes as he leaned further into Kasai. “Kai?”

“Hmm?”

“Could you…by chance…drag me off to the healing ward now? My arm really hurts.”

Kasai laughed at the request, easily yet carefully lifting the brunet as he stood, carrying him bridal style. “Sure thing. Maybe Yuki’s in there right now.”

“Probably not. And if she is, she’s probably taking care of Yuuji - I don’t know how he manages to hurt himself so frequently.”

“Centrinel in training, remember? I remember seeing a couple of them about kill each other a few days ago. Midair crash. It was not a pretty sight.”

“Ouch. Remind me to look every direction before I go flying again.”

“Mmkay. Sure thing…”

“Kai, watch the steps!”

“Oh shi-”
