Come Undone - Chapter Five
Fandom: Original Story
Summary: Once upon a time, there was a bookworm and a fledgling thug. They were the very best of friends, and the bookworm kicked some ass to help out his buddy the thug. Now, six years later, karma came back for revenge.
Disclaimer: Miiiiiiiine :D

There was only one place in town that they would need to check; they would either be right or wrong and that would be the end of it.

“I don’t know if they’ll still be there,” Zayne said, huffing as he sprinted down the street with Alex close on his heels. “But that used to be their main hideout.”

Alex cursed as he nearly slipped on a patch of ice as Zayne came to a sudden stop, turning sharply into an alleyway between two buildings. “You think they have him there?”

“Can’t think of anywhere else in town,” the blond called back, screeching a curse himself as he skidded across some ice, bouncing off a wall before regaining his balance. “If they had gone anywhere else it would be a couple towns over, and then it’d be damn near impossible to find them.” Zayne stopped, giving Alex a chance to catch up, frowning. “Besides, I think they want us to find them. I know they were pretty pissed that you got me out of there…and you saw the messages they sent Jay.”

“So it’s revenge they want?” Alex asked as he caught up, nearly scowling. “And they take Jay to do that.”

Zayne nodded, fury in his eyes as he turned and carefully stepped between two buildings, slipping around the metal trash cans set up there. “Jay’s the only one close enough to us to get the reaction they wanted,” he explained, again waiting for Alex to catch up. “You’re the only other person I’d go looking for, and they wouldn’t go after you after you punched Darrius out.”

Alex let out a harsh, irritated breath as he followed Zayne further down the narrow alleyway. “I knew I should have pressed Aunt Tara to put him in a self defense class,” he groused. Zayne stopped him with a hand on his shoulder, shaking his head.

“It’s not your fault,” he said. “If anything, it’s mine for getting involved with those assholes in the first place. Now, shh. We’re almost there.”

Alex nodded, following him in silence as he stepped around more trash to the only unbroken door left in the area. Or rather, what had been the only unbroken door, as when it refused to open when Zayne tried the handle he settled for kicking it in, the old, brittle wood giving under the impact.

“So much for being quiet,” the blond grumbled, ripping the remains of the door out of the way. Stepping inside, Zayne glanced back at Alex, motioning for him to come closer. “Keep close,” he murmured. Alex nodded once, and Zayne turned forward again, cautiously leading him through the dark store-turned-warehouse towards the dim light he could see on the far side.

Stepping around another large crate brought them into an opening, and Alex swore when he spotted Jayden on the other side, slumped unconscious on the floor.

“Jayden!” he exclaimed, throwing all caution to the wind and sprinting across to where his cousin lay, Zayne close on his heels. The teen groaned quietly as Alex put a hand on his arm, shifting away from the touch.

“He’s one big bruise,” Zayne muttered, looking over the many bruises and cuts that covered Jayden’s skin.

“Frostbit, too…” Alex whispered, carefully rubbing his cousins fingers between his hands. “We gotta get him home, and fast.”

“Leaving so soon? But the fun hasn’t even started.”

Zayne swore violently as he turned around, Darrius only a few feet away.

“What the hell are you doing, Darrius?” he snapped. “Reduced to kidnapping people?”

The short, stocky man grinned, crossing his arms. “Oh, this is just a one-time thing. Special occasion, really.”

“Why Jayden?” Alex asked, watching the few others he spotted moving in the shadows around Darrius warily. “He doesn’t have anything to do with you!”

The brunet cackled, shrugging. “Why, he’s related to you of course! And you owe us quite a lot, Mr. Caine.” Zayne moved closer to Alex as Darrius came closer, the other gang members remaining in the shadows. “After all, not only did you attack me six years ago, you stole away our best member!” he exclaimed, pointing at Zayne. “And I’m afraid I simply cannot let that slide.”

“You’re insane,” Zayne said, glancing back at Alex as he lifted Jayden into his arms, standing up and moving closer to the blond. “I left because I wanted to. I wasn’t going to waste my life running with you jerks.”

Darrius’ entire personality seemed to switch, and he was suddenly scowling like the teen they had known several years ago. “I remember differently, Zayne,” he spat. “You would’ve been fine here had it not been for him!”

Zayne frowned as he moved to stand next to Alex, putting his hand on his shoulder. “Take Jay and run for it,” he whispered, ignoring Alex’s startled look. “I’ve got an idea to stall them for a bit.”

“I’m not leaving you here!” Alex hissed back, eyes widening. “You’re good but not that good, Zayne!”

“Alexander,” Zayne whispered firmly, making Alex freeze – very rarely did Zayne call him by his full name, and he instantly knew he was not going to like where this was going. “Get. Out. Of. Here. I’ll be fine. Jay needs to get somewhere warm and if we both stay chances are he won’t. You need to go.”

“Zayne…” Alex murmured, looking pained.

“Let Alex and Jayden go,” Zayne said, squeezing Alex’s shoulder briefly. Darrius snorted, and one of the others in the shadows laughed.

“And why would I want to do that?” Darrius asked, tone mocking. Zayne scowled, dropping his hand from Alex’s shoulder to clench it into a fist.

“If you let them go…I’ll come back,” Zayne offered, closing his eyes so he would not have to see the betrayed look on Alex’s face. It was silent for a long moment, before Darrius began to laugh.

“What a deal!” he exclaimed. “Get rid of the trash and hit the jackpot in one fell swoop! Deal!”

“Zayne--!” Alex hissed, eyes wide in alarm. “What are you-“

“Shh,” the blond hushed, putting his hand on Alex’s back and guiding him forward. “Trust me, ‘Lex. Please. Just this once.”

Darrius grinned at the both of them, reaching up to pat Zayne on the shoulder when he was close enough. “Good choice, Zayne!” he exclaimed, mood seeming to fall when he looked at Alex. “And you! Get out of here, and take that idiot with you!”

Alex scowled at him, but hesitated to leave; Zayne frowned at him, gently pushing him. “Alex, go,” he said softly. “Get Jay out of here. I’ll catch up in a bit.”

Alex gave Zayne a final, pleading look as he stepped forward. “I trust you,” he mouthed silently before he turned and bolted, headed for the door as quickly as his legs could carry him. Zayne watched him go in silence, attention snapping back when he realized one of the others was speaking.

“Hey hey hey, what about initiations, Darry?” the teen asked, and Zayne swore he could hear a grin in his tone. “Can’t let him back in that easily!”

Darrius smirked, crossing his arms again. “Of course. I have a special task for you. To prove yourself again.” Zayne stood silently, listening. “Go chase those two down and bring them back.”

Zayne snarled, eyes narrowing. “Go to Hell,” he snapped, lunging for Darrius.
